Années 50, années rock'n roll

La première forme historiquement identifiable de rock'n'roll, est le rockabilly, un croisement de rhythm and blues et de musique country. Les premiers guitaristes de rock comme Carl Perkins, Scotty Moore ou les Everly Brothers, avaient tous des racines dans la country. Elvis Presley enregistre ce qui est probablement l'un des tout premiers morceaux de rockabilly, le 5 juillet 1954, à Memphis, dans les studios Sun de Sam Phillips (mort le 30 juillet 2003), avec "That's All Right Mama", un titre créé en 1946 par le bluesman noir Arthur Crudup.
Mais c'est Bill Haley and The Comets qui signent l'acte de naissance du rock'n'roll. En 1955, le film "Blackboard Jungle" (Graine de violence), se sert de "Rock Around the Clock" (une reprise de Sonny Dae and His Knights, 1952) Bill Haley (enregistré en 1954 mais passé inaperçu) comme bande sonore. Ce premier tube de l'histoire du rock est N°1 des hit-parades aux USA (8 semaines) et au Royaume-Uni (3 semaines) en 1955. D'autres vont suivre... D'abord Chuck Berry avec "Maybeline" puis les pionniers du rock Gene Vincent avec "Be Bop A Lula" en juin 1956, Buddy Holly avec "That'll Be the Day" en mai 1957, Jerry Lee Lewis avec "A Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' ", et Eddy Cochran en 1958 avec "Sommertime Blues". Sans oublier Little Richard, qui sur son premier 45 tours, signe quatre des plus grands standards de rock, à savoir : Tutti Frutti, Long Tall Sally, Rip It Up et Ready Teddy. Entre temps Elvis sera devenu célèbre en juin 1956 après avoir interprété "Hound Dog" sur la chaîne de télévision CBS, avec son célèbre rictus et son déhanchement provocateur qui choquera une partie de l'Amérique ( par la suite il sera interdit de filmer Elvis en dessous de la ceinture).
Auparavant considéré comme un vêtement de travail, le blue jean a été popularisé par le mouvement rock ainsi que par les idoles de cinéma comme James Dean. Le rock n'influence pas seulement la mode, mais plus généralement les arts, du cinéma à la peinture en passant la littérature. Hollywood s'y intéressera et quelques films feront date : en 1956 sortira "The girl can't help it" (la blonde et moi) film dans lequel Gene Vincent et Eddie Cochran se rencontrent, et "Rock, Rock, Rock" , en 1957 "Jailhouse Rock" ( le rock du bagne) avec Elvis. Par ailleurs deux grands films laisseront leur empreinte sur "l'attitude rock'n'roll" : La Fureur de vivre (Rebel without a cause) de Nicholas Ray avec James Dean et Nathale Wood en 1955 et l'Equipée sauvage (the wild one) de Laszlo Benedek avec Marlon Brandon 1953. Le rock puise son image dans celle de ses héros : marginaux, contestataires, anti-conformistes, rebelles... Ce sont eux qui font la légende, et avec une mort souvent fidèle à leur image : violente... Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly et Ritchie Valens décèdent dans des accidents de transport; Carl Perkins et Gene Vincent y échappent de peu.Quant à Chuck Berry en 1958 il est prison pour détournement de mineure; Bill Haley mourra dans la misère en 1981, répétant dans un bar texan qu'il avait été le grand Bill Haley, sans que personne ne veuille croire à son histoire.
En france à la fin des années 50 le Golf Drouot devint le point de ralliement d'une "jeunesse turbulente" qui s'y pressait afin de profiter de l'électrophone du lieu et de découvrir ainsi les premiers disques de rock'n'roll directement importés des USA (Bill Haley & his Comets etc…). Sentant le vent la propriétaire accepta sur l'idée d'Henri Leproux de le transformer en club musical réservé aux jeunes.Il accueillit les premiers artistes de rock'n'roll français, dès la fin des années 50 Johnny Hallyday y fît ses premiers pas d'artiste suivit d'Eddy Mitchell et des Chaussettes noires etc…. La plupart des grands groupes français d'alors y naquirent. Le rock'n'roll en France avait trouvé son antre…
1960 voit d'un côté les purs et durs Rock et de l'autre les Yéyés qui , eux, tout en chantant rythmé ne remettent pas en cause l'ordre établi de la france gaullienne. Eddy Mitchell parle de "blousons noirs qui brûlent leurs dernières nuits avant de partir pour Alger, Algérie". Sinon les chansons parlent de filles, de voitures, de samedis soirs pour danser le twist.
La génération des années 50 crut possible de faire du rock un mode de vie. Le mythe dure encore, et les générations suivantes ont toutes tenté de le faire exploser… pour se le réapproprier.

1954 Oldsmobile Super 88 Holiday Coupe'.
Oldsmobile styling was mainly derived from two convertible showcars at the 1953 General Motors Motorama, the Fiesta and the Starfire. The Fiesta actually went into limited production in 1953 along with the Buick Skylark and Cadillac Eldorado. It was based on the "98" series convertible, and at a hefty price of $ 5,717, it found only 458 buyers. By comparison, the Buick Skylark was a much cheaper $ 5,000, and 1,690 were sold, over three times the number of Fiestas sold. The Starfire was a sleek, low-slung concept car that was named for the Lockheed F94B Jet fighter plane. Both of these showcars previewed features that were used on the 1954 production Oldsmobile, including curved glass, wraparound windshields, dipped beltlines, chrome side trim, and bladed spinner wheel covers. Just like on the Fiesta and Starfire, 1954 Super 88 and 88 side trim began at the beltline as an angular verticle chrome slash that extended down just beyond halfway of the rear quarter panel, and then became a horizontal strip that extended to the rear of the car. This chrome strip became a demarcation point that allowed for colorful two-tone treatments that featured a darker contrasting color on the roof, trunk, and rear quarter panels of hardtops and sedans, and on the trunk and rear quarter panels of convertibles. As an example, the Super 88 Holiday Coupe' in Ken's photograph features the same dark green metallic over white that was a popular color combination of the limited production '53 Fiesta convertible.
